Balanced Face Profile…Small Changes that make a Dramatic Difference

My last blog overviewed the three views of the face: front, side/profile and the ¾’s. Each view dictates a different shape and different curvature of the facial features. This blog outlines how to get a perfectly balanced profile using small changes that make a dramatic difference. For those people who are unhappy with their profile, know that it changes as we age, but that it can be corrected and/or enhanced. For many patients, correction is of great value to them for various reasons.

The eyes nose and chin are three distinct facial components, but they all work together to present a youthful and attractive appearance, whether one area is detracting from your overall appearance, or the aging process has begun to affect your face as a whole. There are a variety of surgical and nonsurgical options we offer to create or restore harmony and beauty.

Profile changes that occur:

EYES … Drooping upper lids, under eye bags, crow’s feet and a sunken hollow appearance are the first signs of aging and profile change.

Celebrities, Careers, Body Sculpting and the Lipstick Effect

Looking Good on Facebook Spikes a Rise in Plastic Surgery Requests:  Social media is about seeing and being seen. A survey of 752 surgeons revealed a 31% increase in plastic surgery requests from people wanting to look better on Social Media.  Procedures most requested were:  Botox, Rhinoplasty, FaceLifts, ArmLifts (Brachiaplasty) and Breast Augmentation.

EXECUTIVES, CAREERS and PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURES…We live in a very visual world today and this affects even careers.  A colleague of mine, from Manhattan, sees a lot of men and women executives and high profile individuals who are in the public eye constantly.  Their pictures are taken constantly…and they are expected to always look good!  YouTube, Facebook, HD Television and public appearances demand they look their absolute best.  These people previously focused mainly on the face…but now are into Body Sculpting as well. Top Five Reasons People Choose Rhinoplasty Surgery…A.K.A. “Nose Jobs”

NO TWO NOSES ARE ALIKE!  Every Rhinoplasty surgery is individualized and is very complex and difficult.  But, the rewards are significant.  A nose surgery can offer subtle or very dramatic results to your overall look and can correct nasal function.  However, since every nose is different, an experienced surgeon and the patients’ realistic expectations are a must otherwise, some patients are disappointed with the results of their surgery and request “Revision Rhinoplasty.”  Revision Rhinoplasty differs from primary surgery and is typically a more difficult surgery.  It is performed to correct deformities or imperfections from the primary surgery which altered the nose thus making revision results less predictable.  I perform countless nose surgeries and am always grateful for good outcomes.

OK…the top 5 reasons people have nose jobs:

1) to correct asymmetries or depressions in the nose

2) for displaced implants or cartilage grafts that make the nose look bulbous/round

3) to correct nasal obstructions hindering breathing

4) Nose is too large, too small, too long, too wide, flared nostrils etc……

5) nasal tip has drooped…making projection inadequate, out of balance

The nose is the most prominent facial feature and can either enhance other facial features or distort them.  People who choose Rhinoplasty share a common concern about the appearance or function of their nose and desire for overall facial balance.

• Little spider veins (telangectasias) often occur in second surgeries
• Revision is very detailed/complex as nasal form must be restored and breathing mechanisms must be repaired
• These challenges increase surgery time
• Few surgeons are highly trained or specialized in nasal revision surgeries

BOTOX® for BELL’s PALSY TREATMENT

Botox is not new.  In fact, it’s been used worldwide for decades for both functional and cosmetic treatments. Synkinesis is pain and discomfort caused by nerves that have regrown into the wrong facial areas thus causing misdirected muscle responses. This occurs during the recovery phases of Bell’s Palsy when the regenerating nerve fibers initially migrate through a common channel called the main nerve trunk.  These soon divide into branches bound for the brows, eyes, cheeks, lips, neck and these migrating fibers are forced to select a path.  Sometimes, some nerve fibers earmarked by the brain for a particular function, may ultimately choose the wrong path and grow in the wrong location.  When this happens, for example, fibers responsible for smiling may grow to the muscles at the corner of the mouth and eyelid thus causing lip movement and eye closure instead of a smile. These are abnormal, hyperactive functions called Synkinetic function. These responses include “tears” when laughing or chewing, abnormal blinking when talking or chewing and other discomforts. Botox injections have proven very effective in hosts of patients suffering with Bell’s Palsy and other neuromuscular disorders.

Asymmetry (facial) resulting from Bell’s Palsy is one of the top reasons patients seek my treatments.  Botox, when injected into isolated spastic muscles reduce the synkinesis symptoms allowing for retraining of the brain and muscles while the Botox blocks the nerve/muscle actions.  Physical Therapy is typically coupled with the Botox treatments for ultimate results and the ongoing retraining process.
