THE EYES and Blepharoplasty Surgery

My last two blogs have covered facial balance and how to achieve an “Ideal Profile.” Especially this time of year, most patients want to avoid surgery by using “quick fixes.” Quick Fixes include Injectable Fillers. Injectables and Botox are terrific for restoring youthfulness to the face, hands, and other body areas when surgery is not an option. See my last blog for a good overview on Facial Balance, Botox BrowLifts to correct mild ptosis, Nose Reshaping to delay Rhinoplasty surgery, and other age reversing options.

Even though we’re through May, people are still requesting these quick fixe options for the instant results. Today’s Advanced Injectable treatments are amazing, and can correct many facial irregularities, with wonderful, longer lasting results than we could offer a decade ago. But…Injectables and Botox are not always the right treatment option. Read On…

THE EYES and BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY …IDEAL FACIAL PROFILE

When there is too much facial aging, Injectables may not get the desired results. Surgery is indicated when muscles are lax and excess fat and tissue needs to be removed. The brow, upper eyelid and lower eyelid all age in unison. When these problems occur, people have Blepharoplasty Surgery:

  • Droopy eyebrows
  • Upper eyelids deflate and droop
  • Hooded upper eyelids
  • Outer eye corners drop down
  • Under eye bags form

These are all skin, fat and muscle changes that are easily corrected by Blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery can take up to 10 years off an aging face and keep you looking for many years.

Visit my website for complete info on this and other age defying options: www.DAVinciplastic.com.

BOTOX BROWLIFT for instant results without surgery. A few well placed Botox injections can eliminate forehead and brow wrinkles, lift the brow and restore youthfulness. It’s easy to determine if you are a good candidate for this option, during your consultation. If so, a few minutes and a few injections into pre targeted areas can take years off your face.

RHINOPLASTY SURGERY (Nose Job)

Not everyone is a good candidate for injectable nose reshaping. For those who need surgery, please know that surgery is capable of delivering much more significant and pronounced results. Rhinoplasty is the versatile yet complex are of nose reshaping. It involves a blend of artistry, science, expertise and balance.

The nose is the most defining feature of the face. If it is distorted in any way, it may cause the entire face to appear out of balance.

Many people are unhappy with their nose. They were born with an unattractive nose or it may have become distorted through illness or injury. Common complaints are: it’s too wide, too long, slopes in the middle, has a bump or hump, is poorly defined, inhibits proper breathing (functional) etc. A deviated septum is a common sports injury that causes functional nasal problems and requires surgical correction.

RHINOPLASTY is one of the most common surgeries performed today. If you are unhappy with your nose, don’t just live with it! Let’s fix it!

I HAVE MANY AGE REVERSING OPTIONS and QUICK FIXES in my TOOLBOX!

Let’s Talk.

Balanced Face Profile…Small Changes that make a Dramatic Difference

My last blog overviewed the three views of the face: front, side/profile and the ¾’s. Each view dictates a different shape and different curvature of the facial features. This blog outlines how to get a perfectly balanced profile using small changes that make a dramatic difference. For those people who are unhappy with their profile, know that it changes as we age, but that it can be corrected and/or enhanced. For many patients, correction is of great value to them for various reasons.

Fat can be your "Friend"...

The eyes nose and chin are three distinct facial components, but they all work together to present a youthful and attractive appearance, whether one area is detracting from your overall appearance, or the aging process has begun to affect your face as a whole. There are a variety of surgical and nonsurgical options we offer to create or restore harmony and beauty.

Profile changes that occur:

EYES … Drooping upper lids, under eye bags, crow’s feet and a sunken hollow appearance are the first signs of aging and profile change.

NOSE…Gravity takes its toll to add years to your visage as a “subtle lengthening” can cause a profound aging effect. Rhinoplasty and Injectables can reverse this and take years off the nose.

CHIN…The chin begins to look different as skin sags, fat accumulates and bone is lost with age, as these changes cause significant lower face aging. Injectables can restore volume, contour and youthfulness to this area.

YOUTHFUL EYES ARE CREATED WITH: Injectables and Botox for people who do not need surgery and who are looking to refine or extend the results of a previous procedure. They are very effective for correcting wrinkles and depressions around the eyes. Ideal patients:

–     Are in their 20s or 30s and have good skin elasticity Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane are good choices since they are hyaluronic acid that attract water to plump up the area.

–     Crow’s Feet and BrowLifts candidates benefit greatly from these fillers. Botox is also great for eliminating Crow’s Feet and achieving an injectable BrowLift. Botox cannot replace surgery, if needed, but the benefits of Botox cannot be minimized.

–     BROW SHAPING the eyebrows themselves can have an impact on the appearance of the eyes an adjacent facial areas. Eyebrows are essential to being youthful looking, rested and bringing balance to facial contours.

BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY for YOUTHFUL EYES when cosmetic options aren’t enough. The brow, upper eyelid and lower eyelid all age in unison. The outer corners of the eyes drop down, the upper lids become deflated and droop, and bags form under the lower lids. Eyelid surgery can correct these fat, excess skin and muscle changes. Youthful eyes can be yours again either with injectables of Blepharoplasty.

VOLUMA is the treatment of choice to restore hollow cheeks without surgery.  See my website for complete info on Juvederm Voluma: www.DAVinciplastic.com.

Youthful Looking, Aesthetically Pleasing…Ideal Profile

There are actually three views of the face: the front, side or profile, and the three-fourths view. Each view dictates a different shape and different curvature of the facial features. Regardless of a person’s favorite view of his or her face, everyone wants an attractive, profile…and one that’s a close to their ideal as possible. In brief: people want a “perfect” facial profile.

Fat can be your "Friend"...

Here’s what an ideal facial profile looks like:

  • Profile that’s straight and in tune with the rest of the face
  • Youthful looking, aesthetically pleasing profile
  • Masculine or Feminine ageless look
  • Forehead that isn’t entirely round or flat (upper face)
  • Straight nose with some concavity to it (mid face)
  • Full lip projection (lower face)
  • Well defined chin, neck, jaw line (lower face)

For those people who are unhappy with their profile, know that it can be corrected and/or enhanced. For many patients, correction is of great value to them for various reasons.

Understand first the facial thirds and your aging profile, then you can determine how to correct or enhance what you’ve got to work with.

Our “profile” changes as we age. This occurs from the top of the face down. Here’s what you are likely to experience:

  • Flattening of the forehead
  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Under eye bags and hollows
  • Loss of cheek volume & definition
  • Lines & folds around the mouth
  • Chin & neck sagging
  • Jowls & neckband formation
  • Hollowing of the temples
  • Drooping nasal tip
  • Nasal bumps & humps become pronounced

Since the facial anatomy is divided into “thirds”…the upper, midface and lower face, the goal is always to achieve balanced proportions with one another.

TODAY’S OPTIONS…include “quick fixes” that are here to stay. For those who start young enough doing the small things such as Injectable Dermal Fillers, Skin Resurfacing, Botox and others, surgery may be delayed or avoided completely. The Boomers are on it and are having all the Age Defying, Age Reversing procedures offered today…because they want to look as good as they feel. The Millennials are right behind them and consider cosmetic, anti aging treatments to be a regular part of the normal health care regimen.

For every problem listed in the bullet points (above) we have a treatment option that is age reversing and can give people the facial balance and attractiveness of their dreams.

BALANCE is the KEY! Balance among the three facial areas is the key to an attractive face with a harmonious look and good alignment.

LIPS are IN TODAY! Much focus is placed on lips today. They should be perfectly proportioned and this can be accomplished with Juvederm or another HA filler to restore volume and lip color.

WRINKLES & LINES ARE OUT! We eliminate lines, wrinkles and folds with Botox (around the eyes/forehead), Juvederm/Voluma in the cheek area (midface), Restylane and others in the lower face. See my website for more on injectables: www.DAVinciplastic.com.

SPRING IS HERE and Moms, Sisters and Daughters are showing up in our office for similar treatments…since they’ve discovered that families do age the same!

TOP MYTHS about TOP BODY REFINING PROCEDURES…

shutterstock_50309701FLAT, TIGHT, TONED, FLAB FREE…what ever your goal is for your body sculpting treatments, especially for the midsection, knowing what really works and what is not so effective makes a big difference.  There are always “myths” attached to popular procedures whether they are surgical or non surgical.  I want to cover a few of those in this blog to empower your mission in Body Sculpting, Refining, Reshaping…or whatever it may be.  Hands Down the best way to achieve a flat, toned tummy is with a surgical Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty).  Read on!

TOP TUMMY MYTHS:  1)  A Tummy Tuck can make you constipated.  Wrong!  TRUTH: When done properly, a tummy tuck should have no bearing on your digestive tract since no incisions are made near the digestive system.  The only time problems arise is if a large hernia exists in a nearby space.  If so, it should be addressed.  There is always potential for some swelling in the stomach that could temporarily affect the bowels but in most cases, after healing is complete and you are no longer wearing a compression garment, no problems should exist.   2) You can’t have a Tummy Tuck right after a C Section.  TRUTH:  You should never have a Tummy Tuck right after delivery since time is needed for swelling to resolve and extra weight to be lost.  “Too posh to push” was coined when Hollywood celebrities were electing to have C Section deliveries combined with immediate Tummy Tuck surgery.  Bad Idea!  Both surgeries are invasive and require healing time.  Also, during breast feeding hormone levels are elevated and most new moms have water weight to deal with.  Tummy Tuck surgery should be done about six months post delivery.  3)  During a Tummy Tuck the belly button is removed and a brand new one is made.  Wrong!  TRUTH:  The belly button is never removed during a Tummy Tuck, only the loose, excess skin around it is removed (excised). The belly button is attached to a “stalk” that goes deep into the stomach and cannot be removed.  The belly button may be reshaped and repositioned as excess skin is removed.  In this case, the belly button is simply pulled up through the skin once the tummy has been reshaped and excess skin and fat removed and tightening is done.  It’s the original belly button you were born with attached to the tissue stalk you were given in utero.  http://www.davinciplastic.com.

shutterstock_45617737TOP BREAST MYTHS:  1)  A Breast Lift is the only way to lift the breasts.  Wrong!  TRUTH:  Implants are often used if your skin is in good shape and sagging is minimal. The right implants offer a nice lift, increased breast volume and reshaping.  Surgery is needed when muscles and skin are too relaxed and stretched. Then surgery can tighten and lift muscles to where they belong, excess sagging skin can be removed and the breast lifted to a naturally beautiful position.  2)  After a breast lift, your breasts will stay perky and in a high position forever.  Wrong!  TRUTH:  Nothing is forever and just like the rest of your body, the breasts continue to age and settle even after a surgical breast lift.  However, the breast lift keeps you looking years younger.  3)  Fat Transfers to the breasts makes your breasts immune to weight changes.  Wrong!  TRUTH:  Just like the rest of your body,  the breast weight can fluctuate for life.

WHAT AGE IS TOO OLD for COSMETIC PROCEDURES?  The better question is:  When is it too late?  Sadly many people wait too long and then require invasive procedures…if they had started when younger…NON INVASIVE would work to minimize the visual effects of aging.  More on that in future blogs.

Celebrities, Careers, Body Sculpting and the Lipstick Effect

shutterstock_54896854Body Sculpting is so popular among today’s Boomers, GenXer’s and Millennials.  Social media plays a leading role in driving patients of all ages into surgeon’s offices for invasive and non invasive procedures to sculpt and refine the body of their dreams.  Social Media, FaceBook being a primary source, has proven to dramatically influence people of all ages and from all income levels to have FaceLifts, Chin Augmentations, Nose Jobs, Eyelid/Forehead Lifts, Breast procedures, Arm Lifts, Tummy Tucks…and many more.  See my previous blogs on Body Sculpting for details on what’s involved in Body Refinement and Contouring.

Looking Good on Facebook Spikes a Rise in Plastic Surgery Requests:  Social media is about seeing and being seen. A survey of 752 surgeons revealed a 31% increase in plastic surgery requests from people wanting to look better on Social Media.  Procedures most requested were:  Botox, Rhinoplasty, FaceLifts, ArmLifts (Brachiaplasty) and Breast Augmentation.

shutterstock_88823152-1EXECUTIVES, CAREERS and PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURES…We live in a very visual world today and this affects even careers.  A colleague of mine, from Manhattan, sees a lot of men and women executives and high profile individuals who are in the public eye constantly.  Their pictures are taken constantly…and they are expected to always look good!  YouTube, Facebook, HD Television and public appearances demand they look their absolute best.  These people previously focused mainly on the face…but now are into Body Sculpting as well. They get paid more to look great!

CELEBRITIES CHOICES INFLUENCE US!  We learned from the “Celebs” how to defy aging by employing anti aging treatments. The key is to start early (at the first sign of tiny facial lines, etc.) and to always maintain in order to always look about 10 years younger.  A few of today’s celebrities have heavily influenced how people want to look.

·      Kate Middleton’s Nose is the nose of choice among the World’s female population

·      Cheryl Cole’s Dimples…well those are hard to copy

·      Robert Pattison’s jaw is the envy of scores of men

·      Brit Jude Law has the most requested nose for men

·      First Lady Michelle Obama has the most admired arms causing a spike in requests for Upper Arm Lifts (Brachiaplasty)

·      And the list goes on………….

SCULPTED BODIES and the LIPSTICK EFFECT…The economy today has also driven people in for cosmetic procedures.  We have developed a “collective vanity” per some analysts, but not  according to the younger generations today who consider looking good to be important to overall good health.  In fact,  they budget for cosmetic procedures as part of their health regimen. So they come for FaceLifts and Body Sculpting regularly.  Those who cannot afford those options choose less expensive anti aging treatments such as Botox, Injectable Fillers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and others to reduce the visuals of aging.  This is called the “Lipstick Effect.”  We cut back on big ticket spending and opt for the “injection effect” to stave off surgery a bit longer and to allow the economy to improve.  We also indulge a bit and buy that cologne, perfume or special lipstick we’ve been wanting!

MOST POPULAR BODY CONTOURING/REFINING OPTIONS: Liposuction, Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), Lower Body Lift, Mommy Makeover, Daddy DoOver, Thigh Lift, Cellulite Treatments, Buttock Augmentation, Rhinoplasty (Nose Jobs) FaceLifts, Brest Augmentation, Breast Reduction, Breast Lift, Labiaplasty (FemGen for V Zone Rejuvenation)…and more.  See my website: www.davinciplastic.com.

Well, Winter is still blasting away…but Spring will come!  Are you ready for all the events?  Bikini…Beach Season will be here soon.

BODY CONTOURING…Body Sculpting…for CURVES WHERE YOU WANT THEM!

shutterstock_54896854BODY CONTOURING is a general term for Cosmetic Surgery Procedures used to reshape, resculpt or change the size, profile or parameters of the body anatomy.  Contouring employs  surgical and non surgical methods to achieve the desired results.  This blog will focus on the surgical methods that are in top demand today…such as Mommy Makeovers, Breast Augmentation and Buttocks Augmentation.  Since no two people are identical, I tailor an individualized program for each patient.  No “cookie cutter” plans here!

CAREFUL PLANNING with your SURGEON IS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENT, DESIRABLE RESULTS in BODY CONTOURING…to remove bulges and curves you don’t want and create curves you do want…where you want them!

REASONS PEOPLE HAVE BODY CONTOURING:

  •     Considerable Weight Loss
  •      Post Pregnancy…Desire for Pre Pregnancy Body
  •    Saggy skin and skin flaps that won’t retract in spite of diet and exercise
  •      Excess fatty deposits, flab and bulges that won’t budge
  •     Out of Shape Body due to all the above
  •    Cellulite pockets causing unsightly dimples
  •   Baggy clothes…nothing fits right except baggy, saggy tops/bottoms
  •   Desire for a healthy, firm, trim body to improve self image and self confidence

WHEN IS A GOOD TIME to have BODY CONTOURING (Sculpting/Shaping) DONE?   Every person is different so times will vary, but you should be in good general health and at a stable weight (for about 6 months) in order for the chosen procedures to be safe and effective.

BODY CONTOURING…THE GOAL of all Body Contouring surgery is to achieve balanced and harmonious sculpting, by treating the body as “a whole” and never treating the body as “isolated parts.”

BODY CONTOURING SURGERY MAY INCLUDE:  Liposuction, Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), Body Lift, Arm Lift (Brachiaplasty), Breast Augmentation using implants, Breast Reduction and/or Breast Lift. Nose Jobs, Necklift/sculpting Eyelid/Brow Lifts, FaceLifts, Thigh Lifts, Buttocks Augmentation/Reshaping/Lifts etc. and several more procedures.  See my website for more info: www.davinciplastic.com.

FULL BODY CONTOURING TODAY INVOLVES … Liposuction to remove isolated fat deposits to eliminate bulges on the thighs, hips and abdomen. Liposuction sculpts the body to the proper proportions and offers dramatic results that can be maintained with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) to remove excess abdominal skin and fat to create a smoother, flatter tummy.  Lower Body Lift to remove excess fat and skin from the thighs, lower abs and buttocks, as well as to tighten and lift everything to resize, shape and contour this area. Breast Augmentation, Reduction and Lifts to create desirable breast size and form and Arm Lifts (Brachiaplasty) to achieve upper body balance.  Arm Lifts involve removal of excess fat and hanging, flabby skin under the arm.

COMBINATION of PROCEDURES for BODY CONTOURING!  A combination of procedures is common to achieve each patients individual plan for Body Sculpting.  See my last two blogs for more info on methods used today.

MOMMY MAKEOVER is one of today’s Top Body Contouring/Sculpting procedures.  Watch for my next blog to get updated on Mommy MakeOvers.

Spring is on it’s way soon…Family Reunions, Graduations, Weddings, Corporate events, and more.  Are you ready to put your “best body” forward.  If not, let’s talk now.

LONG, HARD WINTER…is HARD on SKIN – It has been a brutal winter across the Nation.  The fluctuating temperatures, dry heat and wind can also be brutal on your skin.  I’ve given ideas in my last few blogs on how to avoid skin damage…please see those blogs.  Here are 6 foods to eat every day for great skin.

1) Oranges, grapefruit, kiwi and strawberries are loaded with Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant skin saver, rejuvenator and protector. Vitamin C reduces inflammation that can lead to acne, protects against collagen breakdown that leads to wrinkles and even repairs sun damage to avoid sun spots.  Fresh is always best!

2)  Berries like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries contain higher levels of antioxidants than mild colored fruits and vegies. Antioxidants fight free radicals. Eat lots of fresh berries!

3)  Poultry such as free range or organic turkey or chicken help boost the bodies collagen structure.  These high quality proteins help the body replenish natural collagen and the tryptophan found in poultry encourages restful sleep.

4)  Green Vegies also boost collagen production and protection. along with high doses of Vitamon C.  Dark colors are more nutritious.

5) Walnuts (especially) and other nuts are a great source of Omega 3’s essential for skin health.  Olives, Salmon and Avocados are as well, in case you’re allergic to nuts.

6)  Green Tea…yes it is a powerful antioxidant with benefits to numerous to mention!  Drink it hot or iced…but drink it.

OK…Stay well and let’s talk soon to help you get into shape.
